Tragically, most of the world’s original forests have already been lost or degraded, and those that remain are falling fast. The scale and pace of deforestation in Indonesia alone is so extreme it is having devastating consequences for species, communities and the climate. RAN’s campaigns are designed to confront the two primary drivers of this destruction, the expansion of palm oil plantations and logging by the pulp and paper industry.

This is your frrriend Tiki the Tiger and I need your help!

Can you (and your class, if you are a teacher) send valentines to a company and tell them to have a hearrrrrt for the world’s rainforests??

A big company called Cargill Incorporated is having a harrrd time realizing how important it is to protect rainforests!

Tell Cargill: "HAVE A HEART!"

Their CEO is named Mr. Gregory Page and he needs to hear from YOU what really matterrrrs: rainforests! Rainforests provide homes for animals (like me!), plants and trees. Rainforests keep our planet healthy and cool our climate. Can you tell this guy to have a heart and stop cutting down rrrainforests?

“Well why is his company cutting the rainforest down?” you might ask… Good question! Cargill imports palm oil into the United States. Palm oil comes from a certain kind of palm tree. Cargill wants so much palm oil that they are cutting down the rainforest to make more room for giant oil palm farms. Then palm oil gets put into all kinds of stuff: soap, lotions, even candy bars and cookies!

We might like some of that stuff too, but not enough to cut to the rainforest! Fortunately YOU can made a difference.

Make a Valentine forrr Gregory Page, Cargill Inc. CEO telling him to HAVE A HEART for the world’s rainforests.

Send it to him at this address:

Gregory Page: CEO, Cargill Inc.

PO Box 9300
Minneapolis, MN
55440-9300
United States

If you wanna take a picture with your whole class holding up their valentines to Cargill, we would LOVE to see your great work! Please get perrrrmission to share these photos, and we can post them on Tiki’s blog! You can email photos to: tiki@ran.org

Thanks! Together we can save Indonesia’s rainforests!

Love,
Tiki The Tiny Tiger

Hellllo everyone! Tiki the Tiger here. I just made the coolest new friend everrr, and I want you to meet him! His name is Todd Parr, and he is a children’s author – that means that he writes books for kids. I like Todd because sometimes he is silly and makes me laugh, but I also like Todd because he loves and cares for the Earth, our home.

Todd and I recently hosted an event together at The Booksmith in San Francisco. At the event, Todd read all of his favorite books, including my all-time favorite, The Earth Book. This roarrrsome book teaches us how we can take care of the earth each and every day. And The Earth Book is even printed on recycled paper – meaning no trees, especially those in my rainforest home, were cut down to make it!

After Todd read his books, my friends at Rainforest Action Network, helped

Roaring for Tiki, photo: RAN/Lola Catero

me to tell my story (since not everyone can understand when tigers speak). They told everyone that my forest home in Indonesia was being cut down for paper used in books. No one was happy when they heard that, so everybody, big and small, ROARed with me and agreed that rainforest-safe books, like the Earth Book, were the way to go.

The whole day was tigerrrific! Thanks to Todd Parr for being my friend (and favorite author) and to the Booksmith for hosting us and supporting rainforest-safe books! I hope we can all get together again one day soon! For more photos of the event, check out my Facebook page!

Apparently you can’t always tell a rainforest unsafe book by its cover, but you can tell a rainforest safe book by locating a few key labels. Rainforest safe books are printed on:

Post-consumer recycled paper

FSC certified paper

Recycled paper

So when you buy a book, look for these labels to check if it’s Tiki-certified! I certify environmentally safe books that don’t destroy my home!

As you know, my little roar isn’t heard by many people and I need your help to find out what companies and publishers are destroying my home. But first I need to find out what books and companies are not! There is just one problem…I am all the way in Sumatra.

That’s where you come in.

Will you help me by sleuthing your local bookstore for rainforest safe book titles? It’s a perfect activity for World Rainforest Week, coming up on October 17-23. It will be tigerrrrific! You and your friends can be detectives in search of FSC and Recycled symbols! When you find a rainforest safe book, give yourself a paw-on-the-back and write down the title and author. The more books your find the longer our rainforest safe reading book list will be!

From there, I am certain we can find out what companies are destroying my home and together we will roar loud and clear for my home, Indonesia’s rainforests.
